The Jason Floyd Golf Academy Tournament Travel Squad to the Penha Longa Resort in Portugal

The 2025 Jason Floyd Golf Academy Tournament Travel Squad returned to Sotogrande on Sunday the 9th of February from their campaign at the Penha Longa Resort in Portugal.

Our Triple A Elite and Junior athletes competed in the Atlantic Youth Trophy, hosted at Penha Longa. This tournament was an excellent opportunity for our students to diversify their experience, by playing against high-level athletes from Europe.

Penha Longa is one of the greatest golf resorts and contemporary courses in the world, ranking in the top 100. The course includes an incredible environment, surrounded by the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, but also provides a huge challenge for our students. Designed by the great Robert Trent Jones jr. it requires careful planning when approaching this course, as it is heavily technical as well as a tactical challenge, every shot needs careful planning.

After promptly leaving on the morning of Wednesday the 11th, the students were all excited for their upcoming trip, travelling to Penha Longa, located in the east side of Lisbon. The squad embarked on their plane to Lisbon from Malaga airport, arriving smoothly in Portugal and settling into the Resort and preparing for the rest of the week ahead.

Thursday was a day devoted to practice, preparation and tactics. The students explored the course, talking through their plan and strategies for the tournament and becoming familiar with the layout of the course and its intricacies. However some overnight rain caused the course to become even more of a challenge. The ground became soft and more vulnerable to the golf balls plugging in the wet conditions. Although this revelation was frustrating for players, they did get relief in these instances.

The rest of the week featured some very anticipated sunshine, allowing the players to feel more comfortable in their game. But with the ground still being soft, made for overall a very tough tournament for our students to play in.

The results from the Atlantic Youth Trophy saw Triple A Junior student Ewan Widor emerge victorious in the U14’s Category with scores of 76, 74, 82 (232). Following Ewan was his brother and Triple A Future Student Sean Widor in 4th place with results of 81, 82, 79 (241). In the Girls category, Maria Khristenko placed tied 4th place in the U18’s group with scores of 84, 79, 81 (244).

A huge congratulations must go out to all the Jason Floyd Golf Academy students for persevering through the conditions and pushing their limits. Large scale tournaments like the Atlantic Youth Trophy, have golfers from all over Europe competing and allows our students to diversify their opponents and form healthy relationships with different competitors. In addition to this, playing at a different course with a unique style such as Penha Longa is also an amazing opportunity for our students to learn and develop their understanding and knowledge of the game.

Another thank you, must go to the Jason Floyd Golf Academy team for their constant support and hard work throughout this year’s TTS trip. Our team is dedicated to providing the very best physical, mental and technical support possible for the students and preparing them as golfers but also for whatever direction they choose to go in life.

The next tournament for our students is in more familiar territory at the San Roque Golf & Resort course from the 19th – 21st February at the Triple A European Open.
